GALITCHA - North Indian Folk and Sacred Music
Rhizome Cafe, (317 East Broadway)
part of Caravan Local Global Music Series
When traditional Indian rhythms meet popular Western instruments, an irresistible new sound is born. Visiting us from Ottawa, Galitcha invites audiences to experience a host of musical sensations - from love songs to lively dance tunes, alternating between French and English, the performers explain the meaning of songs sung in the Punjabi, Urdu and Hindi languages. Music with a strong North Indian footprint overlaid with influences from Western folk, jazz and instrumentation from around the world with Kuljit Sodhi vocals, percussion; Stefan Cihelka tabla, percussion; Linsey Wellman flute, soprano & alto saxophones, vocals; Chris MacLean vocals, harmonium, guitar, dulcimer & ik tara.
